Kamphaeng Phet

Kamphaeng Phet

History: Kamphaeng Phet has a rich historical background. It was founded in the 14th century and was an important city during the Sukhothai Kingdom and later too in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The city played a part in the defence of the two kingdoms because its location on the river Kamphaeng Phet was the first line of defence for kingdoms invading from the north.

It was more than a defensive city but also a trading hub for groups in and around Siam, which has led to the city having a diverse ethnic mix of people that we nowadays would all class as Thai. You can explore the old city walls, temples, and other structures that showcase the architectural beauty of the Sukhothai period.

Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park:

Let's start with the obvious. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the main attraction in the province. The park showcases ancient structures such as Mueang Chakangrao, Mueang Nakhon Chum, and Mueang Trai Trueng. Predominantly made of laterite stone (the red stone) with religious sites on the west bank of the Ping River at Nakhon Chum built of bricks and smaller in scale. You can explore the huge ruins that date back to the 14th century, the area is very wide. A serene space where you can reflect on the ancient civilizations that once thrived here.

Wat Chang Rop

Wat Chang Rop, translating to "temple surrounded by elephants," is a historic site founded in the 15th or 16th century, located in the Aranyik area of Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park. This temple is renowned for its unique chedi, which stands on a square base adorned with 68 elephant statues that appear to carry the structure on their backs. The laterite stuccoed sculptures, although weathered over time, still showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of the era. The temple's alignment along an East-West axis and the presence of a large pond, originally a quarry for laterite blocks used in the temple's construction.

Wat Chang Rop:

Wat Phra Kaeo

It's right in the middle of the city, not the historic park so you don't have to go far to find it. Wat Phra Kaeo is famous for its huge white stupa that stands out. It's also home to a reclining Buddha. You can walk around the temple grounds and see all the intricate details and decorations. It's a great spot to take some photos and learn more about the culture and history of Thailand.

Defensive Wall

Kamphaeng Phet is a province in the lower northern part of Thailand. Its name means "wall of diamonds" because of this wall, but it's not made of diamonds of course, in fact it is laterite walls that form a rectangular shape, each side measuring around 2.5 km. There are four gateways, located at the centre of the walls on each side, serving as entry/exit points and for defence. The North Gate, Nakhon Chum Gate, is the most well-preserved and has intricate stone carvings. The East Gate, Nakhon Chedi Gate, has partially collapsed. The South Gate, Nakhon Kaeo Gate, is partially restored, and the West Gate, Nakhon Luang Gate, is popular with visitors. These walls were built to protect the city and its inhabitants from invasions during ancient times.

The Ping River

Is one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, which is the main river system in central Thailand. It originates in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand and flows southwards through Kamphaeng Phet before joining the Chao Phraya River near Nakhon Sawan province. there are still many dining options in the area that offer scenic river views or are situated near the riverbanks. I highly recommend the Platapien eatery on the river.

Wat Nong Pling

Wat Nong Pling is a faithful reproduction of temples from the Sukhothai period. Wat Nong Pling aims to give you a glimpse into the past and the chance to experience the architectural beauty of that era. The use of laterite, a reddish-brown stone commonly found in the region, is employed to accurately replicate the style and appearance of the original temples from that time.

The people in Kamphaeng Phet tend to be friendly and close-knit. They're into social activities like festivals, religious ceremonies, and traditional celebrations to keep their customs alive.
