There are local buses, also known as fan buses, that run along Highway 4 from Bangkok down to Phuket but I wouldn't recommend using them unless you have no other choice, as the fans on these buses may not be enough to keep you cool. You can flag down these buses at any point along the road, although there are some popular spots with bus stop shelters and benches.
You don't need to book tickets in advance for these regular public buses. Just board the bus, let the driver know where you are headed, and take a seat. A staff member will come to collect the fare and issue a ticket. The fare to get to the Phuket bus terminal is approximately 120 THB or it was not so long ago anyway.
